Karyn Davey is the founder of Evolving Canvas. Here is her story:
I originally studied Interior Design and have an Honours Degree in Interior Design. I worked for a couple of small family run businesses earlier on in my career. The second family ran a business where they designed offices and had teams which built what they designed. They taught me all about sites and materials and I also learnt a lot from the teams. I then realised that I much preferred the problem solving and project management side of sites rather than the design side which was mostly office bound work.
After working for a shopfitting company for 5 years where I ran a drywalling division and gaining more knowledge on how to run a business, I took a break for 6 months to decide what next I wanted to do and how I wanted to grow as a person.
I then started up Evolving Canvas in February 2009 from the request of an old client needing my project management skills. Evolving Canvas was then primarily started as a project management business and it was only in 2010, 18 months later, that I took on the teams again based on needs from clients who still knew me as a drywalling contractor. Although pure project management yielded far better profits, it came with a lot more stress and less fun for me. I then over the years started focusing more and more on the construction side of the business and did away with what was the pure project management side.
Now I project manage turnkey projects where I have my own teams on site and manage the subcontractors who are involved on the projects, i.e. electricians, flooring specialists, air conditioning, etc. So the project management days didn’t go to waste!
I am a female in a male-dominated industry, and my edge is paying attention to detail, communicating well and having deep compassion for both my staff and my clients alike.
